Gourds

Throughout Western art history, artists have used charcoal for sketching. Though less precise than graphite, charcoal suits freer expression allowing for the exploration of bigger shapes and tonal value. With sticks of charcoal and white pastels, we studied the fruits of the harvest: in particular the wild forms of squash and gourds. The children loved these weird forms and really enjoyed the messiness of this process.
